In light of the recent legislative developments in New South Wales, we, the Little Sisters of the Poor, wish to communicate our position regarding the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2022 (the Legislation), which took effect on the 28th of November 2023.
Our mission and services are deeply rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Church and the charism bequeathed by our Foundress, Saint Jeanne Jugan. Central to these teachings is the inviolable sanctity of human life, from conception to natural death.
The Legislation introduces measures that allow individuals meeting specific criteria to end their lives under medical supervision. Known as Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD), this practice directly opposes the core values we uphold.
We wish to affirm that the practice of VAD directly conflicts with our foundational beliefs regarding the preservation of life. We are committed to fostering an environment of love, compassion, and dignity for everyone, particularly the elderly and the infirm whom we serve.
In accordance with our beliefs, and to avoid causing distress to our residents, their families, and our dedicated staff, Mount St. Joseph’s Home in Randwick will not partake in or facilitate the VAD process. This extends to all our staff, who are instructed not to engage in or provide information regarding VAD.
We kindly ask for the understanding and respect of our community in upholding these directives. For those seeking information about VAD, alternative private avenues should be pursued.
